우리는 무늬만 가족입니다.
무늬만 ~이다 라고 한다면 어떻게 표현할까? 무늬 color? 어처구니 없는 영어가 될 것이다. 그래서 단어로만 영어를 잘 할 수 없다. 어쨌든 무늬만 ~하다 라고 할 때에는 in name를 쓴다.
가령 예를 들어, 그들은 무늬만 부부이다 라고 한다면 They are a man and wife in name 이라고 하면 된다. 숙어형으로 from the teeth outward 역시 겉치레, 말로만, 보기로만 의 뜻이 있다.
그래서 His flattery is from the teeth outward 라고 하면 그의 아부는 겉치레에 불과하다 이다. On purpose 역시 일부러, 가장되게 의 뜻으로 They act like they are a man and wife on purpose 는 그들은 말로만 사이 좋은 부부처럼 행동한다 가 된다. 예를 들어 She pretends she is busy everyday 그녀는 매일 바쁜 척 한다. He told her that he is busy today on purpose 그는 그녀에게 오늘은 바쁘다고 바쁜 척 했다.
